Illustrated portrait of Linda Hargrove

Linda Hargrove

Has lived in Boquete, in Panama's Chiriquí highlands, since 2016.

Linda Hargrove spent 22 years as a hospital administrator in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she learned that the best systems are the ones people actually use. When her youngest left for college in 2016, she and her husband traded their four-bedroom colonial for a hillside casita in Boquete, drawn by the cool highland air and the promise of a slower pace. Within a year she was the person neighbors called when they needed to know which clinic in David accepted which insurance, how the pensionado visa really worked, or where to find a plumber who showed up on time.

Linda has navigated nearly every part of Panamanian life: buying property, importing a car, setting up a corporation, and renewing residency paperwork more times than she can count. She speaks conversational Spanish, volunteers with a local animal rescue, and grows more coffee than she can possibly drink.

Her approach is practical and warm. She will tell you honestly what Panama does well (healthcare access, the dollar economy, retiree discounts) and where it frustrates (bureaucracy, rainy-season roads, the occasional power outage). Linda believes the best move abroad is an informed one, and she writes for people who want the full picture before they pack.

Resident of Panama since 2016.

How our guides are written

Our guides are written by Linda Hargrove, our Panama Country Guide, who lives in Panama and writes from experience on the ground. The Landed team edits each guide. Where a guide relies on an official source, we link it at the end. Rules and costs change, so every page shows when it was published and last updated.

How we make money

Our guides and move plans are free. The professionals we introduce you to pay us for the introduction, and you decide whether to hire them. How it works explains this in full.
